VOICE-OVER is one of our specially selected non-book products. These products are good companions to many of our titles, and can help children with special needs and their caregivers--parents, teachers, and therapists--be safe and productive.

What it is:
This small voice recorder/playback unit has 10 seconds of recording time which can be recorded over repeatedly. Conveniently, the record button is concealed so messages cannot be accidentally erased. Touching the button on the front of the unit plays the message back; there's no rewinding necessary to replay. The unit plays over 500 times on one set of included batteries!

How it's used:
VOICE-OVER is an invaluable tool for children who are nonverbal or are hard to understand, or who have difficulty with social skills and initiating conversation. Stow it in a pocket or affix it (adhesive included) to almost anything. Use VOICE-OVER with children with disabilities--autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, TBI, or developmental delays--in a variety of ways:

  • add to a picture schedule to prompt the user what to do next
  • pair with a visual support to enhance its effectiveness
  • include with a sentence strip to practice syntax
  • create scripts to practice conversational exchanges
  • use as an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tool
  • make a talking book for beginning readers
  • give instructions or cue a child through the steps of a self-help skill
It's inexpensive enough to buy multiples to use at home, in the classroom, or in the community--wherever a voice cue or a simple AAC device might be helpful. With VOICE-OVER, children who experience difficulty with verbal communication can order food for themselves at their favorite restaurants, participate in classroom discussions with pre-recorded answers, improve language skills, start a conversation, follow the steps in self-help routines, and participate more fully in daily activities.

Use with Teaching Conversation to Children with Autism; Self-Help Skills for People with Autism, as well as other Woodbine House titles.
