"What Did You Say? identifies and explains the most common difficulties that cause speech intelligibility problems in people with DS, including differences in mouth and facial structure, articulation challenges, oral motor skills, volume, rate of speaking, rhythm, staying on topic, taking turns, eye contact, familiarity with the topic and environmental factors. By pinpointing the problem(s), speech therapists and families can work together to address them.
The video provides a nice overview of the complex process that everyone needs to go through to acquire speech. It also shows examples of how to treat the different problems that contribute to unintelligible speech and provides positive examples of young people with DS who have worked hard to develop clear speech.
An added plus is a section on speech intelligibility goals and IEPs Rather than vague goals as 'To improve speech intelligibility' an effective IEP goal would support a long-term vision for success as an adult and would outline the path needed to get there. Specific, measurable goals to be completed by a particular date are needed.
Buy a copy--and share it with your child's speech therapist!"

"[This DVD] was extremely informative and inspiring. I also found the end section dealing with IEPs fantastic. I thought the part about IEPs was a great overview or 'IEP 101' that would be a great starting point for anyone dealing with the process."
-Joseph Doherty, a parent of a 10-year-old with Down syndrome
